New Spartan 3E Cocoon cuts the USB tether.
Version 2.01 of the Spartan 3E Cocoon adds the ability to store bitstreams in SPI Flash enabling stand alone applications. The design is released under a Creative Commons license and has been submitted to a board manufacturer. Design files can be downloaded at the Spartan 3E Cocoon project page.

There is a new video of the AVR8 Soft Processor running C code was posted to the Front Page and the AVR8 project page. The AVR8 is an AVR compatible soft processor that is patterned after the ATmega103 processor.
