John English of Boulder Engineering Studio put together an art installation titled, “Sound Puddle” for the Apogaea Festival in Colorado.
Since he needed to drive 1664 RGB LED’s with 10 SPI masters, all at the same time, he decided on using the Papilio FPGA board.
Alvaro Lopes heard about the project and was quick to jump in with the ZPUino Soft Processor and his astounding FPGA skills, together they made something simply amazing! Alvaro developed a custom ZPUino Soft Processor that could drive 10 SPI light strips, capture audio, perform 1024 point FFT, and do Hann windowing without missing a beat!
“The electronics are based on a Zpuino running on an Papilio FPGA board. The system performing FFT analysis on input from a microphone, and controls 1664 RGB LEDs using 10 simultaneous SPI ports.”
We have some preview videos that show the system being tested, we expect to have some more videos of the system in action once Apogaea is over. If you are going to attend Apogaea be sure to stop by the SoundPuddle tent and say Hi.
See more videos after the split.
