John English, of Boulder Engineering Studio, has put together an amazing art installation the uses a Papilio to drive 1664 RGB LED’s! The SoundPuddle uses the ZPUino Soft Processor to implement 16 SPI masters, a 1024 point FFT, and a VGA like framebuffer interface to drive it all from a sketch! An ADC connected to a microphone provides the input for a giant sound reactive display that immerses you in light. It’s like being inside a giant spectrum analyzer that surrounds you and lets you experience sound with your vision!
It truly is an engineering marvel that was the outcome of a wonderful Open Source collaboration between Alvaro Lopes, the creator of the ZPUino, and John English. It can currently be enjoyed at Colorado festivals such as Apogaea, and with John’s new Kickstarter project a SoundPuddle MegaWing will allow others to duplicate the SoundPuddle at art festivals around the world. He also intends to use funding from the Kickstarter project to push the envelope and extend the installation to control 3840 RGB LED’s at once!
