Chess-Playing FPGAs @ Design West 2014

— by

Warren Miller of All Programmable Planet has a plan to turn his research and writings about teaching an FPGA to play chess into a real thing – at next year’s Design West event. His plan is to have “an extravaganza at Design West 2014 in which electronic “Robot” chess players can compete on the big stage.” Okay then, sounds like this is right up our alley.

Our “Robots” will be housed on a small printed circuit board (PCB) using an FPGA or MCU (or combination) to implement “chess-playing computers.” Only standard, off-the-shelf FPGA and MCU development boards available from device vendors will be allowed to compete, so the folks from IBM won’t be allowed to field their Deep Blue supercomputer, for example. It will be up to you to create the design and bring your competitor to Design West — we will provide the stage upon which you can demonstrate your design skills.

In addition to the FPGAs/MCUs fighting each other, humans will get a chance to compete against the “Robots,” so you will have the chance to demonstrate your superiority (or lack thereof) over silicon-based life forms. Having said this, humans are not eligible for the “Robot-only” grand prize.
